It is with great pleasure that I recommend for the executive committee’s consideration the nomination of Mr. Fred Murphy, former assistant superintendent of Polk County, as the Pioneer of the Year recipient.
Mr. Murphy began his career in student transportation in 1972 as a mechanic helper and custodian with Polk County Public Schools. He spent his career working at almost every position in the department at the same time completing his college education. He has served as a regional director (two terms) and as president of FAPT. He has mentored many inside of our organization, including me, and has put in countless hours supporting and advancing student safety and student transportation in the state of Florida.
Along with his professional career, his personal life has also been a reflection of integrity in his community, remaining involved to make a difference. He has served on the board of directors for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Polk County from 1990 to 1994.
He retired from Polk County Schools in November of 2012, making him eligible for this prestigious award from our organization. He is truly fitting for recognition for the positive impact he has made to pupil transportation in the state of Florida and I hope that the committee will consider him to be recognized as the 2018 Pioneer of the Year.
